Dana Kirkwood-Watts, Ph.D.

We cannot understand one problem by ignoring others.

Professor Dana is an Associate Professor at Yavapai College and teaches microbiology from the One Health perspective. She believes that all things are connected, and the health of one is affected by the health of another. This is especially true in a closed system.

She also has a research group of motivated community college students who are studying the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in the Arizona landscapes and how microbial growth changes in a low gravity environment and other stressful times.

Areas of research

Microbiology/Astrobiology:

  • Antibiotic resistance gene expression in stressful environments

  • Changes in antibiotic resistance gene expression and its relationship to climate change

Science Education

  • Technology impacts on science education, learning science, and perception of science
